Support Skin Health with Oil Cleansing
If you are unfamiliar with oil cleansing, it’s exactly as it sounds. Cleansing your skin with oil! Sounds counter productive, right? We spend so much time trying to remove oil from our skin that can clog our pores, however, when using nourishing oils combined with some castor oil, a natural astringent that helps pull impurities from the skin, you create a simple face cleansing routine that does wonders for your skin health! Not to mention, you can save money from any expensive skin care products you may currently use.
If you struggle with skin conditions such as acne, eczema, or rosacea, this is a sign of some gut dysbiosis, or an imbalance in your gut, so it’s always best to work from the inside out by paying attention to what you are eating and if it could be a contributing factor to your skin issues. Even during pregnancy with the hormone fluctuations, some women have reported experiencing acne, but when incorporating the oil cleansing face wash routine, they were able to vastly decrease the acne breakouts or have no skin issues at all! By adding oil cleansing to the mix, you are nourishing your skin and removing dead skin cells and black heads.
One thing to note about oil cleansing…..the skin goes through a detox period as it pulls the impurities from the skin and it may get a little worse before it gets better. For most, it will last about a week, that’s how long it was for me. Once you get past that first week though, your skin will begin improving, and by the end of the next 3-4 weeks you should see noticable improvement in skin oilyness, less blackheads, and less dry skin.
The type of oil you use will depend on your skin sensitivity. I have sensitive skin and have found that coconut oil clogged my pores so I don’t use that oil on my face. Instead, I do a combination of organic jojoba oil and organic sunflower oil with organic castor oil. Here are some of the suggested oils you can use, as noted by Wellness Mama author, Katie Wells.
Avocado oil – Good for combination, dry, or mature skin.
Grapeseed oil – Lightweight oil that’s good for oily or acne-prone skin.
Sunflower oil – A lighter oil that’s good for combination or oily skin.
Sweet almond oil – Good for oily, sensitive, or combination skin types.
Coconut oil – This works really well for some and not so well for others. It can be too drying and pore-clogging, especially for acne. Some people love it in skincare products though.
Olive oil – Great for mature or dry skin, works well for the slightly oilier skin types. Be sure to get real olive oil though since most of what’s in the store is mixed with other, cheaper oils.
Rosehip oil – This oil is great for more oily skin types but in smaller amounts it’s also a good anti-aging oil. Full of vitamins A and C to help with scar tissue, blemishes, and wrinkles.
Argan oil – Packed with vitamins A and E, antioxidants, and linoleic acid. It’s emollient (soothing), helps protect against free radical damage, is anti-aging and moisturizing.
Jojoba oil – Similar to skin’s sebum, jojoba has vitamins E and B as well as minerals. It won’t clog pores and it’s great for all skin types.
I like to purchase my oils from Mountain Rose Herbs, but you can also use some of the recommendations by Wellness Mama.
And as previously stated, organic castor oil is used as a natural astringent to pull the inpurities out of the skin. When I make my concoction of oils, I will do 3 tablespoons of the castor oil, and 6 tablespoons each of the other oils, mixed in a bowl and then funneled into a dark color glass bottle with a lid.
Steps for use:
Pour about a teaspoon worth of oil into your palm and take two fingers of your opposite hand to dip into the oil and massage over the face.
Let it rest for a minute (or longer for deeper cleansing) and then use a wash cloth with warm enough water to create a slight steam that you will drape over your face and press and hold until the towel cools down enough to repeat once more.
I take the time with the towel over my face to practice some slow mindful breathing.
Then you’ll take the corners of your towel to wipe away any excess oil, leaving a tiny bit as a gentle moisturizer, or use some gentle moisturizer if you feel the need.
I will either do this method of face washing before bedtime or in the morning, usually not twice a day. Stay consistent with this practice to support your skin health, and always address the foods you are eating as well. Our bodies show us when something we eat doesn’t agree with us, and sometimes it comes up through the skin!
